Sarah Lee Wins Gold Infront of Home Fans

Hong Kong’s Sprint World Champion won her third consecutive sprint World Cup event at the HK Velodrome in front of her ecstatic home fans.

On Day 2 of the 2019-2020 UCI Track Cycling World Cup: Hong Kong, local star and current World Champion Sarah Lee Wai Sze was utterly dominant in the Women’s Sprint, storming to her third straight World Cup gold.

Three Hong Kong riders competed in the Women’s Sprint, Sarah Lee clocked the fastest time of 10.590 seconds in the Qualifying 200m time trial and advanced to 1/8 finals with ease.

Jessica Lee Hoi Yan recorded a time of 11.002 seconds and advanced to the 1/16 Finals where she defeated Russian rider Natalia Antonova to progress, while Lee Yin Yin ranked last in the qualifying.

Sarah and Jessica went head-to-head in the last sixteen, with the reigning World Champion easily dispatching her teammate in straight races. Lee Wai Sze went unbeaten in the competition, defeating China’s Zhong Tianshi, Ukrainian Olena Starikova and Germany’s Emma Hinze in two straight races to win gold on home soil.

Lee’s win was her third straight UCI Track Cycling World Cup gold in 2019, having also won in Minsk and Glasgow, she’s now unbeaten in the sprint since last June.

Lee will compete in the Women’s Keirin on Day 3, hoping to double her gold tally on home soil.

Hong Kong Cyclothon – 13 October, 2018

In the dawn’s early light thousands of cyclists and fourteen professional cycle teams pedalled their way across Hong Kong in the fourth annual Cyclothon.

In the afternoon the eleven UCI WorldTour Teams, three Pro Continental Teams and the Hong Kong National Team raced all-out in Hammer Hong Kong, the Asian leg of the professional Hammer Series. Team Mitchelton-Scott emerging victorious on the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui to win the Hammer trophy.

UCI Track Cycling World Championships

The 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships will take place at the HK Velodrome from the 12-16 April (Wednesday to Sunday this week). 300 elite cyclists from over 40 countries will gather to compete for the famous rainbow jersey, symbol of UCI World Champion, which can be worn in every race while World Champion. This is the largest track cycling event ever hosted in Hong Kong.

Three World Champion are up for grabs on the opening day of the 5-day event: in the Women’s Scratch, Men’s Team Sprint and Women’s Team Sprint. London 2012 Olympic medalist and defending Asian Champion Sarah Lee Wai-sze will compete on home turf with fellow Hong Kong team members including Diao Xiao-juan, Cheung King-lok, Leung Chun-wing and Vivian Ma Wing-yu. Strong contenders from abroad include Team Great Britain’s Olympic Champions Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Steven Burke and Callum Skinner; Australia’s UCI World Champions Elinor Rebecca, Alex Porter, Callum Scotson and Sam Welsford; and Chinese athletes Zhong Tian-shi, Guo Shuang and Lin Junhong.

Sarah Lee Wai-sze Wins Silver Medal

Hong Kong cycling icon Sarah Lee Wai-sze was outstanding in the Women’s Sprint taking the silver medal behind Lin Junhong at the UCI World Cup being held at the HK Veledrome.

In Men’s Keirin final, Buchli Matthijs (NED) overcame stiff competition and snatched a gold medal. Results of today’s finals are as follows:

Qianyu Yang Takes Bronze at UCI World Cup-Hong Kong

UCI World Cup - HK - Women's Sprint — The Women’s Scratch Race medals went to Marina Shmayankova (BLR), Laura Trott (GB) and Yang Qianyu (HKG) respectively

The largest track cycling competition ever staged in Hong Kong kicked off today 15 January at the Hong Kong Velodrome in Tseung Kwan O. Co-organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and The Cycling Association of Hong Kong (CAHK), the UCI Track Cycling World Cup – Hong Kong saw some early success for Hong Kong as Yang Qianyu claiming the bronze in the Women’s Scratch Race.

Mr Wilfred Ng, SBS JP, President of the Organizing Committee of The UCI Track cycling World Cup – Hong Kong remarked at the opening ceremony, “The World Cup is one of the most important events on the world track cycling calendar. It is also the key competition in which riders earn ranking points ahead of 2016 Rio Olympics. The fact that the competition takes place in Hong Kong this year under the cheering of local fans is a boost for the Hong Kong Team. Show them your support!”

The Men’s and Women’s Scratch Race and Points Race concluded Friday with Thomas Benjamin of France taking two gold medals in both Men’s Scratch Race and Men’s Points Race. The Women’s Scratch Race medals went to Marina Shmayankova (BLR), Laura Trott (GB) and Yang Qianyu (HKG) respectively, while Jolien D’Hoore (BEL) stepped on the top of the podium in the Women’s Points Race.

In the qualifying races, Australia posted a time of 4:00.947 and secured a spot in tomorrow’s (16 January) Men’s Team Pursuit final. As for Women’s Team pursuit, Great Britain rode 4:19.369 to secure the top qualifying spot. In Men’s Team Sprint, Great Britain set the fastest time to move through to the gold medal race against Poland, while Rusvelo team will face Great Britain for the Women’s Team Sprint gold medal.

Saturday’s race schedule, includes the finals of the Men’s and Women’s Team Pursuit, Men’s and Women’s Team Sprint, Men’s Keirin and Women’s Sprint. Hong Kong Olympic medalist Sarah Lee Wai-sze, who will contend in the Women’s Sprint.

There really is only one place to be this coming weekend and that’s at the HK Velodrome where double Olympic Gold medalist and multiple World Champion Laura Trott is among a galaxy of world class cycling stars taking part in the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Hong Kong. Joining her is Hong Kong’s London Olympic cycling medalist Sarah Lee Wai Sze and World Champion, Tour de France Green Jersey Winner and sprinter extraordinaire Mark Cavendish and triple Olympic gold medalist and World Champion Jason Kenny.

Hong Kong is the third and final round of the 2015/16 UCI Track Cycling World Cup – the first two legs having taken place in Cali, Colombia and Cambridge, New Zealand in October and December 2015 respectively. Around 300 world class cyclists will participate and as 2016 is also an Olympic year not only will cyclists be wanting to win the World Cup they’ll also be looking towards securing Olympic qualification.

Cycle for Millions 2015 – 12 April, 2015

Organised by Pok Oi Hospital the Pok Oi Cycle for Millions 2015 will be held on Sunday, 12 April 2015. Now in its sixth year, over 6500 cyclists are expected to participate in this year’s ride which will be held on Stonecutters Bridge and pass through the Nam Wan Tunnel.

The ride route is approximately 13km, starting on the Tsing Sha Highway. Participants will ride through Nam Wan Tunnel and onto Stonecutters Bridge. Passing the turning point on Ngong Shung Road, riders will then return to Tsing Sha Highway and hit the finishing line.

Pollution permitting, the route across Stonecutters Bridge – the world’s second longest cable-stayed bridge – offers a magnificent view over Rambler Channel, while riding through the Nam Wan Tunnel offers something new.

The Pok Oi Cycle for Millions 2015 is the biggest cycling event in Hong Kong with participants divided into two categories – individuals and corporate teams. As it’s a charity event and money talks those raising a significant amount of donations will be rewarded with gold, silver or bronze ‘awards of donation’. Awards will be also given to the best dressed participants and those with creatively designed bicycles.

Enter online at www.cycleformillions.com on a first-come-first-served basis. The minimum entry ‘donation’ is $680 for individuals and $28,000 for teams.
