Valley Black 32-5 Gai Wu Falcons @ King’s Park – 11 November, 2017

For long periods of this match it looked as though Valley Black’s long unbeaten run stretching back almost four seasons was in peril. Gai Wu were aggressive, attacking and full of creative plays. The Falcons though couldn’t turn pressure in points and the deep pool of talent that is the current Black squad made their chances count and then added icing and a cherry on top to cap their fine performance as Gai Wu tired in the final quarter to win 32-5.

Valley spent much of the early part of the game defending deep in their own 22, as Gai Wu started hard and fast and looked to knock the Blacks from their comfort zone. An early attacking scrum on Valley’s 5m line sees the Falcons forwards stand strong, Wai Sum Sham senses an opening but takes her eye of the ball as she picks it up to look for the space and the knock on ends a promising attack.

Aroha Savage drives forward looking to create some breathing room for the Blacks, the Falcons defence is tight and Valley are forced to kick clear. Gai Wu don’t deal with the kick and Colleen Tjsvold picks up and looks to punish the Falcons for their sloppiness. A penalty ensues and with the game still scoreless Valley opt for the kick. Zoe Smith’s attempt hits the post and momentarily there is panic in the Gai Wu defence as the loose ball bounces around.

The Falcons are having trouble clearing their lines as Valley attack, but their defence is solid in the face of multiple attacks. Gai Wu eventually steal the ball and their forwards drive the Blacks back to halfway. Valley looking to respond knock-on and suddenly Greer Muir is free and making a powerful run down the far touchline. The Blacks backline have pace to burn and a fine tackle prevents the first points of the game.

Bella Milo drives Valley forward and Smith kicks deep, but Valley can’t claim the ball and Gai Wu are back on the attack. It’s fast and furious with strong tackles flying in all over the pitch as the Falcons push Valley back again.

Savage collects the ball and rampages forward through the Gai Wu defence and then produces a little piece of magic with a delightful behind her back pass to set Milo free who scores the first points of the game on 26 minutes with a try in the corner, 5-0.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Rugby-Super-Saturday-Deux-Kings-Park-11-November-2017/i-LjftZMG

A lovely restart from Gai Wu sees the ball caught at full pace, she looks to break through and reply instantly but Smith is alert and a fine tackle saves 5 points. Gai Wu continue to press but Valley respond and the ball reaches Jessica Eden on the wing who breaks a tackle and heads for the corner. A strong Gai Wu tackle looks to have saved the try, but Eden’s strong second effort sees her over the line, 10-0 after 35 minutes.

Gai Wu looking to get some reward for their strong first half play, attack again and Valley can’t contain them. A strong Falcons scrum, gives the backline good possession and it’s spread wide, Muir running a lovely reverse line powers through to score, 10-5.

A cracking first half of high intensity rugby ends with the Valley ahead 10-5 courtesy of a sublime piece of skill from Savage.

The Falcons start the second period  working hard to get on even terms and Valley again struggle to get the ball clear in the face of constant pressure. Savage makes another powerful run up the middle to turn defence into attack. Milo continues the attack and Valley are inside the Gai Wu looking to exploit a developing overlap… Chow Mei Nam has other ideas and steals the ball. Breaking out she passes to Muir and it’s a footrace the length of the field. Smith is chasing hard and hauls Muir down inches from the line to the despair of the watching Gai Wu fans.

Gai Wu continue to press, Rebecca Thompson steals the ball and Valley kick it deep. From the resulting scrum Savage picks up and Milo breaks, Smith is free but strong defence ensures the ball doesn’t reach her. Valley recycle and before the Falcons defence is set Milo is through for her second try of the game after 55 minutes, 15-5.

The Falcons are quickly back on the attack  and develop a nice overlap with open field beyond, Kelsie Bouttle though makes a fine interception on halfway and runs unopposed to score under the posts and seal the game for Valley. Smith makes an amazing conversion, her kick hitting the right upright, rebounding across to hit the left post before dropping over the bar, 22-5.

Chasing the game Gai Wu look for a quick response, Smith though kicks the ball into space and Savage is the first to react and she scores Valley’s fifth try in the corner, 27-5 after 60 minutes.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Rugby-Super-Saturday-Deux-Kings-Park-11-November-2017/i-W3WfBbL

Thompson makes some impressive pressure releasing breaks as Gai Wu continue to attack. Needing points, and perhaps feeling the effects of such an intense game, their defence isn’t as tight as earlier in the match. A clearing kick is caught and returned by Smith before she’s well tackled.

Sharon Tsang makes a strong break for the Falcons but is hauled down on halfway.  Valley recover the ball and Thompson with another strong run finishes off a fine counter attack with her first try of the game in the corner on 71 minutes, 32-5.

A fine game of rugby ends with Gai Wu on the attack. The scoreboard doesn’t reflect the closeness of the game. Valley’s strong bench and pure backline pace were too much for a fine Gai Wu side – but it was Aroha Savage’s lovely pass which swung the game to ensure the Black’s unbeaten run continues.

Super Saturday II @ King’s Park – 11 November, 2017

An enthusiastic crowd turned up to enjoy some fine rugby as the first part of the Women’s Premiership reached it’s climactic finale at King’s Park on 11 November with Gai Wu looking to end Valley’s long unbeaten streak. While the other six teams played off to be deemed ‘worthy’ of remaining in the ‘Premiership’ or to be relegated to the development league.

Sadly HK women rugby players  are so used to being disrespected and treated as second class by their ‘governing body’ that it’s like water of a ducks back and they served up 4 fantastic games while around them WNL1 and WNL2 matches were equally exciting – and bc’s camera’s were there to catch all the action.

Valley Black 88-0 Kowloon @ Happy Valley – 4 November, 2017

Valley Black beat Kowloon 88-0 at Happy Valley in a match that for the first half was a lot more even than the scoreline suggests. Chloe Mak pulled Kowloon strings again in a highly competitive first half when Valley appeared lethargic. A halftime roasting from coach Ra saw an energised Valley emerge who deftly and clinically dissected a tiring Kowloon defence.

Kowloon kicked off deep, looking to put some early pressure on the Black defence, the Valley back line as it looks to do each game started on the front foot and were soon passing their way downfield looking for weak point in their opponents defence. Nadia Cuvelier spots one and is away and looking for the opening score.

Chun Yan Ho had other ideas with a beautiful try point saving tackle. Valley recycle, but the Kowloon defence is back and stops the Blacks again. It’s third time lucky though as the ball is again recycled and reaches Jessica Eden who scores easily, 5-0 after three minutes.

Kicking deep again Kowloon look for a quick reply, with Valley knocking on Kowloon have a scrum inside the Black 22, but they can’t take advantage. A big shove from the Valley forwards has them win it against the head only for the pack to see their effort wasted as the backs blow a 5 on 2 overlap.

Kowloon are spending a long time in and around the Valley 22 without really threatening to score. A misplaced Kowloon pass is scooped up by Rebecca Thompson who runs two-thirds of the length of the pitch to score under the posts and give Zoe Smith an easy conversion, 12-0 after 15 minutes.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Premiership-Rugby-4-November-2017/i-D52jpsh

An attacking 5m scrum gives Kowloon a chance, but the pass is dropped and the chance goes begging. Aroha Savage collects the ball, a deep clearing kick isn’t fielded well by Kowloon and Kelsie Bouttle collects the loose ball and swings it wide to Amelie Seure who scores between the posts, which Smith converts, as Valley ruthlessly punish the Kowloon error, 19-0.

The hooped shirts are playing well and making Valley work hard. A clearing Kowloon kick is fielded by Smith who spots Eden in space on the wing and she scores despite the best effort of several Kowloon defenders – 26-0.

The resulting kick-off is deep again from Kowloon, it’s caught cleanly inside the Black 22, two passes out to the wing and it’s in Eden’s hands again who shows a clean pair of heels to all as she sprints 70+m for her second try in a minute, 31-0 on 35 minutes.

Kowloon looking for a score before halftime earn a penalty inside the Valley 22. Spotting the tryline Mak takes a quick one and Valley’s Li Lai Mang, Becky takes a yellow card for the team as the whistle goes for half time. Kowloon have worked hard, but Valley while not playing well have clinically taken advantage of every error.

The Valley players may need to check the Maori dictionaries, as coach Ra offered a strong motivating half time roasting of her squad. It worked though as the Blacks dominated the second half. Riva Brill’s attacking run is ended by Rita Fung, Shan Shan Sandra Pong accepts the offload and scores the first of nine second half Valley tries 90 seconds after the restart, 36-0.

Two minutes later and Kowloon are penalised for taking too long with their lineout and Bouttle powers over close to the posts, Smith convert 43-0.

A minute later and Valley have their third try in three minutes. A quickly taken Black line-out is cleanly caught, the ball swiftly moved through the hands of the backs and Cuvelier scores her first try of the match which Smith converts, 50-0.

Kowloon have no answer to a motivated Valley and Cuvelier scores her second try four minutes later which Smith converts, 57-0 after 52 minutes.

Again from restart Kowloon concede a try, as Brill catches the kick passes it to Seure who scores her second try of the game out wide, 62-0.

Aroha Savage the Black’s dynamic number 8 looked to cap her fine performance by dribbling the ball, football style, through her opponent’s backline for a score. Kowloon managed to drop on the ball just short of the line to prevent the score. Minutes later though it’s Bouttle who scores her second under the posts 69-0.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Premiership-Rugby-4-November-2017/i-jzfrksF

Smith scores and convert her own try as Kowloon have no answer to the Black’s pace 76-0. Fung prevents another with her second try saving tackle of the day, while Smith drops a pass three metres from the line to spoil another chance.

Digging deep Kowloon prop Yip Cho Kwan makes a break looking for a consolation score. Valley though steal the ball in the ruck and Laurel Chor scores in the corner 81-0.

To their credit Kowloon battle to the end, another misplaced pass though allows Colleen Tjsvold to scoop the ball and score from 50m with Smith adding the conversion. Final score 88-0.

Nadia

City Sparkle 12-31 HKFC Ice @ HK Football Club – 4 November, 2017

In a game dominated for long periods by City Sparkle, HKFC Ice had that little bit extra to beat a determined City Sparkle 31-12 under the lights of the Hong Kong Football Club.

It was all City for the first 30 minutes, the Sparkle spending all bar a few moments of it camped inside the Ice 22. HKFC creaked and groaned, bent and buckled and such was the pressure that Martha Webber received a yellow card after just 8 minutes.

Twice City thought they’d scored, but the ball was held up and the Sparkle couldn’t ignite anything from the resulting scrums. Sport can fickle and with their miniscule amount of possession Ice recycled the ball inside their own 22 worked it wide to an overlapping Bernadette Bray and the fullback was away sprinting 70m to score under the posts massively against the run of play. Rachel Fong converted 7-0 after 16 minutes.

The Sparkle resumed their assault on the Ice line looking for an instant reply with Hoi Ying Cheung making a lovely run down the wing. Only to be tackled into touch inches from the line.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Premiership-Rugby-4-November-2017/i-rxJDZqL/A

HKFC finally start to enjoy some possession as the half draws to a close and string a few phases of play together working the ball back and forth across the pitch. City stand firm, but a smart piece of play sees Jaime Yuen Wing Ho loop around outside her winger to create the overlap and she scores in the corner, 12-0 after 37 minutes.

City send the kick-off deep and Ice spread the ball left only to meet a solid Sparkle tackle, a quick recycle and swift hands along the line and Webber is away and she outruns a despairing defence to score under the posts. Fong’s conversion brings the half to a close with HKFC Ice leading 19-0 and City wondering how exactly how they’re down three tries after playing well and dominating for most of the first period.

After some strong words at half-time HKFC look to start the second half on the front foot. City’s defence though stands firm, but as they look to clear Ice steal the ball and Mavis almost scores but she can’t offload and the chance goes begging. The Sparkle are spending a lot of time defending and are unable to get out of their own 22 and relieve the pressure. Ice working hard, looking for a fourth try.

A deep City clearing kick looks to give HKFC another attacking oppourtunity but having drawn in the Sparkle defence the Ice backline looks to take advantage of a three on one overlap only for a crunching tackle from Tsz Wing Donis Fung to shut down the attack.

Ice overthrow a lineout and City string some attacking phases together as they look for a way back into the match. A long pass gives Mila Hiu Lam Pang a chance to run but strong backline defence from Ice keeps her out. A City scrum on the HKFC 22 holds and Agnes Tse breaks three tackles to score under the posts, and then she converts her own try, 19-7 after 62 minutes.

From the resulting kick-off Ice recover the ball and launch a sweeping attack keeping the ball through multiple phases of play, City are tiring but still tackling hard. Ice recycle well and spread the ball wide for Shonagh Ryan to sprint down the line and score, 24-7.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Womens-Premiership-Rugby-4-November-2017/i-R6t3cXz/A

Webber looks to pile on the pressure as she powers her way through several tackles but City finally haul her down and launch an attack of their own only for a fine tackle by Pang to deny City a second score. Sparkle recycle the ball and work it wide where Hoi Ying Cheung scores in the corner on 73 minutes, 24-12.

City kick off deep looking to score again quickly and give HKFC a nervous last few minutes. Ice knock on, but City can’t take advantage. It’s Football Club though who have the final word as Heidi Johnson breaks three Sparkle tackles and spreads the ball wide to Crystal Wray who finishes off a flowing move in style, Helen Lee converts, 31-12 after 79 minutes. And Ice almost add another but Shu Wan Au’s fine tackle keeps the final score at 31-12.

Six into Four Doesn’t Fit…

The penultimate round of the first half of the Women’s Premiership sees six teams in contention for the top four and a place in the ‘reduced’ Premiership for the second half of the season.

The other four sides will be relegated to the Women’s Premiership Development league – the aim apparently is to drive competitive improvement across the whole league. But will a current or potential HK international player want to play in the ‘Development’ league? Hardly likely to improve their chances of being picked…

Sadly the chances are that the gap between the top four and the second four will get even wider as the top four improve and the better players in the development league are cherry picked by the top teams.

In this week’s games it’s third versus fifth as USRC Tigers – their tails up after a hard fought draw with Gai Wu Falcons last week – face off against CWB Phoenix (4pm, HK Education University). Gai Wu play Tai Po Dragons (KGV, 4:30m), fresh from a second win in this league. Kowloon pay a visit to table toppers Valley Black (14:30pm, Happy Valley) while HKFC Ice host City Sparkle at HK Football Club (6pm).

Tigers coach Fan Shun Kei, who knows the meaning of success as a player, including with the Hong Kong national sevens team, is full of confidence after last week’s draw.

“Our physicality and attacking were excellent. We need to keep up that physicality to cope with the last 20-25 minutes of a game, when tiredness comes in – especially later in the year, when we play against Valley or Gai Wu. In the last game, it was the opposite – we came back strongest in the final 10 minutes,” said Fan.

“The team understands that that outstanding performance sets the standard. Nothing will be much different this week in terms of our game plan. If we execute right and make the tackles, then this team can be dangerous in the league. It’s a real improvement on last year.”

The Tigers will be missing three key players this week: last game’s key performer Hebe Talas was concussed playing on Sunday and sits out for a week, while winger Bena Yu Bo Yan and inside centre Lo Wai Yan have commitments.

On the plus side, Natasha Olson-Thorne is back, which Fan says give the side more solidity. “We expect Causeway Bay to come at us. To be among the top four, they really need this game. The first half will be very exciting, as everyone is fresh. They will go hard and we expect to have to deal with their attack,” relishes Fan.

Causeway Bay come into the game off the back of losses to Gai Wu and Valley, and a surprising 10-7 reverse to Tai Po, missing the success they had at the start of the season.

Chris Lin is especially unhappy with last week’s result. “We were missing quite a few players, and several of our squad were just off playing in NL2 games,” he explained. “We made mistakes in defence that resulted in costly penalties, so that’s something we’ve been focusing on this week. If we can hold on to the ball and reduce handling mistakes to improve defensively, we have the backs and the pack to go forward and score.”

“Tigers have strong ball carriers, so we aim to keep the defence error-free and then try to attack the wide lines,” added Lin who focused on what his side should be aiming for in this game, to capture a spot in the Premiership second half.

“We aim to beat Tigers, but to feel confident of playing in the top half after the break, we need to at least pick up two bonus points [for four tries scored, and a loss by seven points or fewer]. I’m positive about our prospects of playing in the top four,” said Lin.

His side sees the return of two key players who missed the previous game: Martini IP Ka Ling, at inside centre, and Ng Wing Yee, who has recovered from her spine problem. Lin says that both are greatly respected by the rest of the team and will inspire confidence through their example as well as their ball-carrying.
