HK Cricket Match Reports: Saturday 7 November, 2015

Saturday Championship Division 1
Saracens got the better of Tartars in a KCC derby match played at Kowloon Cricket Club. Unfortunately, rain curtailed proceedings with the match delicately poised and the result had to be decided using the run-rate calculators.

Saracens batted first after winning the toss and they reached 5/181 from their 35 overs with Deepinder Singh (41) and Ninad Shah (80) providing the bulk of Saracens’ runs. In reply, Tanveer Ahmed knocked the top off the Tartars batting order and from 3/8 they never recovered despite a valiant 51 not out from Miten Khatri. Tartars still needed 42 off the last four overs when the rain intervened and a run-rate calculation confirmed that Saracens were the winners. Tanveer finished with 3/14 from 5 overs.
At KCC: KCC Saracens 5/181 from 35 overs beat KCC Tartars 8/140 from 31 overs by superior run-rate.

Across the puddle at Wong Nai Chung Gap, CCC Jing Sun beat HKCC Gap Ramblers by 19 runs. The CCC boys batted first after winning the toss but they made a poor start and were reduced to 3/22. However a 91-run fourth wicket partnership between Mark Wright (88) and Stuart Henwood (23) bolstered their fortunes and further useful contributions by Chris Owen (34) and Christian Cook (31*) lifted them to an eventual total of 7/226.

The Gap Ramblers top order got their run chase away to a positive start with the openers putting on 53 for the first wicket while the next pair added another 55 runs. However, after that, wickets fell at inopportune times and their momentum stalled. Skipper David Varley was the top scorer with 49 while Raag Kapur scored 41 as Gap Ramblers were restricted to 7/207 in the end. Elliot Andrews was the pick of the CCC bowlers with figures of 4/51 off seven overs.
At HKCC: CCC Jing Sun 7/226 from 35 overs beat HKCC Gap Ramblers 7/207 from 35 overs by 19 runs.

In another close game, Pakistan Association overcame a spirited DLSWCC Sarjan team by 13 runs at Mission Road.

Pakistan Association batted first after winning the toss but they could only manage a total of 145, despite an opening partnership of 60. Daniyal Bukhari’s 30 was their best effort with the bat but the major contribution to their total came from extras with 43, courtesy of 31 wides. Muhammad Ali was the best bowler with 3/28 from his seven over spell.

In reply, DLSWCC lost two of their top batsmen with only 12 runs on the board and then slumped to 5/57. Sarfaraz Khan hit 31 in a 40-run sixth wicket partnership but the remaining batsmen couldn’t finish off the chase as then finished on 9/132.
At MR: Pakistan Association 145 from 33.1 overs beat DLSWCC Sarjan 9/132 from 35 overs by 13 runs.

Saturday Championship Division 2
Taipan CC made it five wins from five as they beat Laguna Gully by two wickets at PKVR Park.

Laguna Gully batted first after winning the toss and they scored 141 thanks largely to Abhishek Desai who scored 48. Jagmeet Brar claimed 3/19 and Mohammad Ali picked up 3/23 for Taipans.

Opener Zeeshan Haider scored 46 in Taipan’s successful run-chase, which was achieved in 27.1 overs – quick enough to earn them a bonus point. Laguna Gully’s skipper Murali Ganesan was the pick of their bowlers with 3/25 from 6.1 overs.
At PKVR Park: Laguna Gully 141 from 31.4 overs lost to Taipan CC 8/144 from 27.1 overs by two wickets.

USRC/MCC enjoyed a runs-feast at the Police Training College where they thumped CCC Hung See by 276 runs.

CCC Hung See won the toss and elected to field first. They then spent the next 35-overs chasing the ball around the park as the USRC/MCC batsmen dominated. Their openers put on 84 for the first wicket with Mohammad Awais dismissed for 36. The second pair added another 100 runs with Iftikhar Ahmed hitting 45. Umar Mohammad was third to fall with the score on 229, having scored 109. Sikander Zafar then smashed the bowlers in the remaining overs, scoring an unbeaten 103 out of the last 133 runs scored. At the end of 35 overs, USRC/MCC had reached a massive 5/352.

The CCC Hung See run-chase got off to a poor start with Michael Zheng dismissed without a run on the board. However, they put up a solid defensive effort against the USRC/MCC attack and managed to get through their innings with only six wickets down. Unfortunately, they could only muster 76 runs as the USRC/MCC bowlers reeled off eleven maiden overs. There were no scores of significance in the CCC Hung See innings but Henry Lam did bat out the full 35 overs for a Boycottesque 12 runs.
At PTC: USRC/MCC 5/352 from 35 overs beat CCC Hung See 6/76 from 35 overs by 276 runs.

Women’s 15s Match Report HKCC 15-0 Tai Po Dragons – 31 October, 2015

Week 5 of the Season saw a HKCC team eager to get back to winning ways against a Tai Po team who had been through similar struggles in recent weeks.

The match began with a constant barrage of attacking pressure from HKCC, with the forward pack having some excellent phases moving up the pitch. The Tai Po midfield was able to hold off the HKCC attack on a number of occasions frustrating the team in white.

After dominating the possession in the opening 20 minutes HKCC finally broke the solid Tai Po defence with Ashely Brooks scoring on her return to the starting line up. HKCC continued to put pressure up the field but Tai Po finally broke into the opposition half to ease some pressure in the closing minutes of a tight first half.

HKCC gathered their thoughts at the break looking to add more points to the possession and trying to find answers for a stubborn Tai Po defence.

It was an excellent opening five minutes for the Tai Po team who worked their up the pitch with some dynamic running and crash balls. However, HKCC managed to absorb the pressure and turned the ball over feeding Tissia Polycarpe, who danced her way through the middle of the Tai Po Defence to make the game 10-0.

Fresh legs began to enter the field and change the balance of the game with Tai Po beginning to get more confidence and putting more pressure on HKCC. Both teams locked horns with neither side giving in. HKCC had throughout the game seen great success from the scrum and after sustaining another 15 minutes of pressure a scrum turnover saw HKCC back on the front foot. A penalty occurred, quickly taken it enabled HKCC to march up the field looking to add another try to seal the match.

It came on the final play of the game with Tissia adding a second try for herself in the corner sealing a 15-0 victory and the second win of the season for the HKCC Ladies.

HKCC enjoyed getting back to winning ways but knew they had been in a tough encounter against a very resilient Tai Po side.

Match Report: HKCC 5-29 City – 24 October, 2015

Round 4 concluded an emotional week for HKCC with the passing of player Tom Nelson and with only 1 victory the HKCC Ladies knew they needed to play their best to win against an undefeated City.

After a minute silence HKCC Ladies kicked off and the ball bounced along the dusty pitch straight into the possession of City, who didn’t waste any time before launching an attack. City drew in the HKCC forwards before passing it out wide to the backs. The City fullback danced her way through the defence and quickly popped it off to the winger who comfortably ran round HKCC’s fullback and placed the ball under the posts. The try was easily converted and within minutes of starting City had set the precedent for the rest of the half.

Another HKCC kick off and much to their dismay similar phases took place with the City backs tearing through the HKCC defence and scoring another try. HKCC picked themselves up and kicked back into the City half. After some hard hitting tackles and scrapping in clouds of dust, HKCC won the ball and began their first serious attack of the game. Yet after too few phases HKCC again lost possession and with a big boot City cleared their lines, putting the HKCC fullback under pressure.

City mercilessly pummeled the HKCC defence and it was not long before another breakthrough ensued. This time much to HKCC’s relief, excellent pressure from scrumhalf Emma Chung led to City knocking the ball on over the try line. HKCC were awarded a scrum which led to a good pick up and hand off from number 8 Lynda Nazer, gaining much needed ground. Nevertheless momentum dropped, City regained possession and once again relied on their backs to successfully score a try in the far right corner.

HKCC kicked off and charged into the City half ready to wrestle for possession. After some phases of play with HKCC absorbing the hits, Comvita booted the ball to clear the lines, but this time the ball was effortlessly picked up by Tissia Polycarpe who ran it out of her own half. The HKCC scrums were working well and turned the ball over more than once yet it was not enough to get HKCC points on the board. City struck twice again before the half time whistle blew, ending the half at 29-0.

After motivational words from coach Alex Tarleton and a reassessment of the game, the HKCC Ladies knew they could do better and were eager to demonstrate this.

City kicked off giving HKCC possession and a chance to attack. With new energy and some strong running, particularly from second row Lauren Petersen who needed at least two City players tackling her to be tamed, HKCC clawed their way up the pitch. Before long and for the first time in the match, HKCC had City pinned against their own try line. Foul play from Comvita led to two yellow cards, something that HKCC were happy to take advantage of. A penalty gave HKCC forwards the ball but unable to break through they passed it out wide to the backs. Winger Yana Dimitrova took this opportunity and skillfully scored a HKCC try in the far right corner.

HKCC received the kick and attempted to move up into the City half but the two teams seemed stuck in a stalemate, tirelessly fighting back and forth but neither giving ground. The fulltime whistle blew leaving the result at 29-5.

Contrary to their usual solid defence, the first half consisted of too many missed tackles and sloppy defending from HKCC, which City’s fast paced backs confidently exploited. The second half however was a completely different game, with HKCC keeping City’s attack at bay and working tirelessly to gain a well-earned 5 points, the only points scored in the second half. The HKCC Ladies look forward to proving themselves in the upcoming fixture against Tai Po Dragons.

Match Report: Valley Red 17-10 HKCC – 17 October, 2015

Week 3 saw HKCC travel to Happy Valley to play the undefeated Valley Red Ladies. HKCC were eager to get back on the pitch and brush off the frustrations of the previous week’s last second defeat to HK Scottish.

Straight from the kick off HKCC pushed up into the Valley twenty-two putting the Red’s defence under heavy pressure. Valley managed to keep calm and were able to clear their lines well. The first half saw both sides creating good opportunities in the backs and strong rucking and scrummaging from both forward packs.

In a closely contested first half HKCC seemed to be on the front foot with their line-out improving vastly from previous weeks and their scrum looking increasingly confident. Hard work from the forwards led to good clean ball for the backs and Izzy Rivers, (switching from second row to centre this week) took advantage, crashing through the Reds defence and scoring the first try of the match. Unable to convert HKCC went into the closing minutes of the half 5-0 up. Yet shortly after Valley retaliated, with their excellent centre breaking through HKCC defence, leveling the game, 5-5 at the halftime break.

The second half saw a fantastic battle between both sides, with each attack being held at bay by the opposition’s solid defence. HKCC showed some great structure, whilst Valley showed a wide range of skills, particularly from the centre, whose huge boot eased the pressure off Valley on a number of occasions.

HKCC’s scrum continued to dominate in the second half and the cracks in the Valley’s defence started to show. HKCC pieced at least 10 phases together and with superb work, particularly from the back-row, Lynda Nazer crashed over the line, to score a well-deserved second try.

Leading in to the final 15, after putting in a great shift on attack HKCC began to tire and Valley took the opportunity to creep up the field. After a clever chip and chase from the ever-present Valley centre, try scorer Nazer held the player back leading to a Red’s penalty and a yellow card shown. Valley used the extra woman to their advantage, charging through the HKCC line to level the score at 10 all.

Similar to last week’s match, HKCC were able to come out with points against one of the favourites for the league but for a second time in a row were unable to secure a victory. In the closing seconds of the game, having used the forwards to work their way up the pitch, Valley quickly spread it out to the backs who confidently scored a try under the posts. The conversion flew over and the referee blew the whistle for full time.

Both teams came off the pitch knowing they had been in a battle, Valley went and celebrated a well earned win while HKCC sat somber and reflected once again on what could of been.

But after the tears had stopped and some wise words from the coach (if I do say so myself) the HKCC Ladies picked themselves up and realised again what an achievement it was. Even missing out in the closing stages it showed again that HKCC are no pushovers and will be fighting to secure better results in the upcoming weeks.

Only 3 games in and so far it has been a roller coaster. Bring on next week!
