Food at the Fair

The fairground midway is all about fun and excitement, sometimes though it’s nice to take a break, grab a bite and a drink and soak up the merriment.

The food offerings at last year’s Great European Carnival were pretty gross all told. This year several restaurants are running the show including Maverick’s, Cafe Siam and f&b company  Color Chacha. There are also two candy floss and popcorn stands for all ages to enjoy. Beer is $50 for a cup. There are no water fountains on the midway

Color Chacha’s stuffed waffle Imagawayaki ($20) are available in double cheese, Hokkaido creamy custard, matcha and banana and chocolate and are very tasty. They are also offering a range of colourful fruit and sweet drinks.

Scorhios naan bread pizza is tasty but pretty pricey at $110 for a pizza that is less than 12 inches. Individual 1/4 pizza slices are $30. Flavours include Peps and Roni’s, The Fun Guys and Marge & Ritas.

Mavericks from Pui o Beach are offering a range of sandwiches including Double Cheeseburger ($70), pulled pork ($60), smoked brisket ($70).

While the baked potatoes ($50) are good, but again once you start adding toppings at $10 each the price shoots up.

Japanese Breakfast and Kiri T @ MOM Livehouse – 28 November, 2017

30+ police provided an unwanted third non supporting act prior to the start of the show. After demonstrating how not to count a group of people effectively, Kiri T got the music started with some originals including her new single Roll Deep in the Feels and a lovely Lorde cover.

The display of police intimidation was easily forgotten as Japanese Breakfast quickly had the maximum legally allowed audience dancing and singing to a widely varied set of stirring guitars, passionate vocals and intimate lyrics featuring songs the bands two albums Psychopomp and Soft Sounds from Another Planet.

Wine & Dine Festival – Some Suggestions

The annual Wine & Dine Festival returns to the Central Harbourfront this weekend fatter for all the fine wine and food indulged in, as the venue’s waistline expands to encompass half of Tamar Park.

There are entrances at both ends of the festival and around 400 booths to enjoy including country pavilions from the USA and a large Bordeaux area in the centre which includes not only wine but also a food from the Bordeaux and South West of France. Items on offer include a French ‘cheesecake’ known as Torteau Formager ($20) and

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Wine-Dine-Festival-Central-Harbourfront-26-October-2017/i-FMvrwqf/A

On the side of the ‘concept store’ Filters Lane is offering chocolate and passion fruit cocktails ($55) which include a fragrant Earl Grey foam.

Hong Kong Street Eats is showcasing it’s cook at home egg waffle with savoury and sweet toppings, nice but a bit small and pricey at $50.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Wine-Dine-Festival-Central-Harbourfront-26-October-2017/i-m6QxsFJ

The hotel zone features some good sized potions of popular dishes from local hotels including The Pullman, Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and City Garden Hotel.

https://bcmagazine.smugmug.com/Bcene-photos/2017/Wine-Dine-Festival-Central-Harbourfront-26-October-2017/i-w77rXxw

Mac and cheese raclette ($100)… from Porterhouse features four cheeses and is rather tasty, but heavy on the stomach. Raclette is popular around the festival with several other stands offering it straight, with meatballs and other combos.

With so many wine booths, our recommendation is to wander around and try things to find those you enjoy. It can get expensive, but step out of what you’d normally choose and try something different. Lots of companies are offering tastes and there are numerous free classes.

Two final thoughts, bring a bottle of water. Even with the more spread out venue, it’s hot. Have fun, there’s lots of good food and drink to taste.
