Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 5-44 Tai Po Dragons @ KG V – 15 October, 2016

It was a balmy evening at the KGV ground as HK Scottish Kukris and Tai Po Dragons met for the first time in National League 1, with the Dragons having previously played in the Premiership. The game started evenly matched, with the Kukris putting Dragons under pressure. But just as the Kukris game-plan was about to yield results, the Dragons turned over the ball and counterattacked. The Kukris were slow to respond and the Dragons scored and converted 7-0. Kukris immediately replied with a good team effort, and Fung Yuen-ting went over in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful 7-5.

The Kukris had a great chance to take the lead. The ball was worked out to Hui Man-ling on the left wing, who kicked it clear of the defence and gave chase. But as she headed for the try line under the posts, she was unable to gather the bouncing ball and knocked-on. The Kukris seemed overly disheartened by the missed oppourtunity. First they gave away a soft try. Then the Dragons scored twice more, by forcing their way through the Kukris’ defence, with two or more tacklers needed to stop each Dragon. Their conversions were unsuccessful, but the halftime score was 22-5 to Dragons.

The second half resumed in similar fashion. The physical Dragons continued to challenge the Kukris defence, and doubled their score; four more tries, with the first converted. However, just as the Dragons appeared to have total control, the Kukris fought back. The ball was won, retained, and then carried forward. Now the Dragons were under pressure, not that the outcome of the game was in doubt. First the Kukris moved into the Dragon’s half, then beyond the 22, and finally had the ball touched down. But the referee called them back for a scrum. And even though it was now the Dragons who were conceding penalties, the Kukris could not manage to score any more points.

Final score 44-5 for Tai Po Dragons. A well deserved win for a very strong Tai Po team, who now go top of the league with maximum points from two games, and impressive figures of 68 Points For, 5 Against.

Next week Tai Po Dragons take on Gai Wu, while Hong Kong Scottish continue at KGV for another 6 PM kick-off against Hong Kong Cricket Club.

WNL1 B Semi-final Match Report: HKCC 48-7 Tai Po Dragons – 5 March, 2016

HKCC went into the knock-out stages of the season still on a high from the previous weekend’s sealing of the WNL1 B league title. Alex Tarleton reports as HKCC played the Tai Po Dragons hoping to reach a Grand Championships final for the first time since its reincarnation.

The opening minutes saw scrappy play mainly in the Tai Po half as the Dragons worked hard to keep HKCC at bay. A defensive scrum was excellently stolen by HKCC to put the ladies in white on the front foot. HKCC made their way into the Tai Po 22 through some good work by the forwards and then two passes down the line unleashed Tissia Polycarpe for her first of the day in the corner, 5-0.

5 minutes later Tissia added her second in almost identical fashion after some good forward play scoring in the opposite corner, with Harriet Jamieson adding the extras to make the score 12-0.

The HKCC forwards continued to dominate play and turned a Tai Po scrum. From the resulting put-in, simple hands down the line to the wing saw the flying Russian Yana Dimitrova score in the corner as HKCC’s lead increased to 17-0.

HKCC continued to put pressure on the Dragons as Tai Po were boxed in their 22 for the majority of the first half. Another scrum 5 metres out and saw the forwards use their dominance to drive towards the line. No.8 Lynda Nazer showed some great footwork before picking up to push over the line to make the score 22-0.

Approaching half time, Tai Po had a spell of pressure pushing HKCC back into their own half. The Cricket Club defence contained the Tai Po attack and earned a scrum. Some great interchanging passes between Ashley Brooks and Tissia Polycarpe brought the play back into the Tai Po half with Tissia sprinting home to complete a first-half hat-trick. Jamieson made the conversion for a half-time score of 29-0.

The second half started with HKCC not taking their foot off the peddle as Ashley Brooks took a quick penalty on the half way line and jinked in and around the defence to score under the posts with Harriet again converting and taking the lead to 36-0.

Tai Po refused to give in and continued to press the HKCC defence, Centre Tissia however stole the ball in the HKCC 22 and danced through the Tai Po defence to score her 4th try with an emphatic run from her own half, 41-0.

In the closing 10 minutes HKCC continued to bombard the Tai Po try-line and a final score arrived as Lynda Nazer scored her second when she again picked up from the base of the scrum and powered over the line. Harriet added the conversion to put HKCC 48-0.

In the closing minutes the proud Tai Po Dragons team continued to play with great heart and passion and their effort was rewarded on the last play of the game. The ball was shifted wide to the wing who, still with a lot of work to do, used her speed to sprint passed the HKCC defenders and score under the posts and with the conversion added, the final score read 48-7.

Match Report: HKCC 41-0 Tai Po Dragons – 23 January, 2016

The weather was reminiscent of a fine UK summers day at King’s Park on round two of the WNL B competition. The HKCC Ladies arrived dressed for the artic conditions making it difficult to bend their legs never mind run. However, with a long and thorough warm up the team in white were ready to go and continue the fine from production in week 1 against Tai Po.

The opening 10 saw a close contest between both forwards packs trying to gain control of the early minutes of the half, only for HKCC to be awarded 3 penalties in a row to charge up the field with former Canadian Carolyn Champion finishing off to make it 5-0 after 10 minutes.

The scrappy contest continued with both sides making errors and seemingly neither side looked like they wanted to score. HKCC began to move up the field and were awarded a lineout on the Tai Po 22. A well worked lineout set up the driving maul and HKCC dove closer to the line with Cheryl Gourley using her strength well to break through a defender to make it 10-0 to the Aberdeen side.

HKCC continued to try and take control of the game with some nice work by the backs, but this game was being won by the forwards and after some nice phases a change of direction saw fiery red Lauren cross the Tai Po line for her first ever try and lead the HKCC ladies into half time at 15-0.

The second half saw the forwards once again show up the backs with Carolyn seemingly do a magic trick from a tackle turned up with the ball with no one home in front of her to double her tally for the day with captain Harriet using her own trick shot to ”convert”.

Continuing the trend Flanker turner centre Chloe Chan got in on the act with a lovely running line to score with a controlled finish and Harriet converted. Chloe double her tally again shortly after with a well worked back move to bring the score to 36 -0 with added kick by Harriet.

With the clock ticking down the final seconds showcased how well the forwards had played with a dominating scrum moving forward helping No 8 Lynda Nazer to pick and drive over and score in the corner to finish the game and giving HKCC a 41-0 win over Tai Po.

Match Report: HK Scottish Kukris 40-5 Tai Po Dragons

As the rain abated, conditions improved, but remained slippery for the Hong Kong Scottish Kukris clash against Tai Po at KGV. With the league split the games should all now be competitive. But as Robbo Robertson reports it was the Kukris who would show the difference between effort and points.

Both teams clearly wanted to prove their ability and a very physical, if somewhat error strew encounter developed. The players moved up and down the pitch, but is was not until the eighteenth minutes that any points were on the board, with LI Sze-ting scoring for Kukris and Suzie Perry converting; 7/0.

Tai Po were not disheartened and continued to push forward. However, it was Kukris who scored again through Robyn Beese, one of their big forwards, powering over the line in the twenty-eighth minute. Again Suzie Perry converted; 14/0. And so the score remained until halftime.

After the restart it was Tai Po who came out fired up, and three minutes into the half scored a try. The conversion was unsuccessful, but at 14/5 Tai Po were looking dangerous. However, the Kukris had other ideas, with their forwards dominating the field. In the forty eighth minute Suzie Perry converted her own try; 21/5. Eight minutes later Robyn Beese scored her second try, although the conversion was wide; 26/5. On sixty five minutes Fung Yuen-ting scored, and again Suzi Perry converted; 33/5. In the final minutes Rachael Wong (Dai Ray), rounded off the scoring as she held off a pack of defenders to score a try. Karis Cheng converted. Full time score 40/5.

Hong Kong Scottish Kukris were pleased with the result, but still have plenty of areas to work on. Tai Po will feel disappointed that they had so little to show for their efforts.

Women’s 15s Match Report HKCC 15-0 Tai Po Dragons – 31 October, 2015

Week 5 of the Season saw a HKCC team eager to get back to winning ways against a Tai Po team who had been through similar struggles in recent weeks.

The match began with a constant barrage of attacking pressure from HKCC, with the forward pack having some excellent phases moving up the pitch. The Tai Po midfield was able to hold off the HKCC attack on a number of occasions frustrating the team in white.

After dominating the possession in the opening 20 minutes HKCC finally broke the solid Tai Po defence with Ashely Brooks scoring on her return to the starting line up. HKCC continued to put pressure up the field but Tai Po finally broke into the opposition half to ease some pressure in the closing minutes of a tight first half.

HKCC gathered their thoughts at the break looking to add more points to the possession and trying to find answers for a stubborn Tai Po defence.

It was an excellent opening five minutes for the Tai Po team who worked their up the pitch with some dynamic running and crash balls. However, HKCC managed to absorb the pressure and turned the ball over feeding Tissia Polycarpe, who danced her way through the middle of the Tai Po Defence to make the game 10-0.

Fresh legs began to enter the field and change the balance of the game with Tai Po beginning to get more confidence and putting more pressure on HKCC. Both teams locked horns with neither side giving in. HKCC had throughout the game seen great success from the scrum and after sustaining another 15 minutes of pressure a scrum turnover saw HKCC back on the front foot. A penalty occurred, quickly taken it enabled HKCC to march up the field looking to add another try to seal the match.

It came on the final play of the game with Tissia adding a second try for herself in the corner sealing a 15-0 victory and the second win of the season for the HKCC Ladies.

HKCC enjoyed getting back to winning ways but knew they had been in a tough encounter against a very resilient Tai Po side.

HKFC 32–5 Tai Po Dragons

Two years ago the Tai Po Dragons and HKFC Newedge Ice combined to field a single team for women’s 15-a-side rugby. This season, in a sign of the continued development of women’s rugby in Hong Kong, they fielded separate teams, though the camaraderie between them has never faded. Nevertheless, after two games and two losses, the Ice Ladies were determined to celebrate their first win of the season, even if it was at the expense of their old allies. And that put an extra edge on the game between the two sides that kicked off at 4:30pm on October 19 at the HK Football Club in Happy Valley.

The Ice Ladies got a boost to their confidence within the first five minutes when Royce Chan ran in a try for HKFC. That didn’t stop the Tai Po ladies putting up a strong fight, constantly competing for the ball but the Ice girls kept creating breaches in the Tai Po defensive line. Last week’s game had taught Ice that they needed more strength and aggression at the breakdown, and with that lesson firmly in mind, defending the ball in the ruck and keeping possession became the rule of the game: Daniella Means and Kim Kan scored additional tries and Helen Lee converted for a half time score of 17-0.

Going into the second half, the energy of the Ice team was peaking, and lessons learned in hard training sessions were obviously bearing fruit. But the Tai Po Dragons came back with a vengeance, determined to put some points on the board; which they did with a try. Then, as both teams started to tire, handling errors crept into the game resulting in frequent turnovers and some messy play in the middle of the half. Still, before the final whistle the Ice girls scored three more tries, two for Daniella Means (taking her to a hat trick) and another for Fiona Atkinson.

It might have been a pitched battle on the field but in true sporting spirit at the end of the tussle the two teams gathered to thank each other for a great game and hug old teammates. It was a fitting end to a competitive game of rugby.
