The Waste Land

The Waste Land

T.S. Eliot’s seminal poem, The Waste Land, comes to life in this new, dramatic adaptation.

Internationally renowned cellist David Pereira teams up with actor and Chinese University of Hong Kong professor Julian Lamb to bring you a fusion of music and spoken word which will appeal to aficionados of The Waste Land as well as those who have never encountered it.

T.S. Eliot’s haunting vision of a spiritually barren post-war Europe is brought to life in a performance which draws out the poem’s vast array of characters as well as its rich lyrical language. Dramatic presentations of The Waste Land are rare since it is often regarded as too difficult to perform. A performance of The Waste Land with live musical accompaniment is almost unprecedented.

The Waste Land is the most influential poem of the twentieth century. It is written in short, interconnected fragments, each one offering a glimpse of humans coming to terms with a world which they find increasingly confusing. For nearly a century, readers have been haunted by its images, amused by its comedy, and absorbed by its vast array of characters.

The music will feature passages of improvisation, original composition, and direct quotation from the work of some of the most important composers of the twentieth century, including Sibelius, Shostakovich, and Schoenberg.

The Book of Esther

The-Book-of-Esther

The Book of Esther, also known in Hebrew as “the Scroll” (Megillah), is a book in the third section (Ketuvim, “Writings”) of the Jewish Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible) and in the Christian Old Testament. It relates the story of a Jewish girl in Persia, born as Hadassah but known as Esther, who becomes queen of Persia and thwarts a genocide of her people. The story forms the core of the Jewish festival of Purim, during which it is read aloud twice: once in the evening and again the following morning. Along with the Song of Songs, Esther is one of only two books in the Bible that do not explicitly mention God.

“The House of Bernarda Alba” is Federico Garcia Lorca’s last play, written the year he was killed at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The action of the play begins during the funeral of matriarch Bernarda Alba’s second husband, when she imposes an 8-year mourning period on her household, in accordance with her family tradition. Bernarda has 5 daughters, whom she has controlled inexorably… How will they survive these 8 years of further suffocation? Candle of Vision – Dawnbreak

Welcome to the Annual Charity Concert 2015, hosted by ICPASS. For now, let us refer to the host using that acronym, but in case you are interested, they come from Imperial College London and wholeheartedly hope to strengthen the attitude and values among students as part of promoting public awareness and social service. This time, the focus is on the issue of eye care, global blindness, and the honourable work carried out by ORBIS, the beneficiary for the Concert.

Yes, all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to ORBIS. But this is a Concert after all, so what do you get?

Well, the experience is priceless. Candle of Vision - Dawnbreak
Four youths, represented by the four seasons. Their story will be weaved right before your eyes, follow them on their intriguing trip of self-searching, and perhaps you will find a piece of yourself in them as well. Many influential figures will appear along the ride, passing on their message and teachings through the universal language of music.

SUPPER MOMENT will make an appearance, along with the enthusiastic choral group GREENERS’ SOUND. International award-winning pianist, violinist, composer and conductor JOHNSON LEUNG HOK KIU will grace them with his mastery of the piano. UK-based 5-piece punk/soul band ANIMAVIVA will bring their different and unique touch, contrasting local talent SIDICK LAM who claims that if we ‘give her a guitar, she will sing till the world ends’. Finally, coming from the same place as the host, the IMPERIAL COLLEGE ENSEMBLE will tie it all up and bring the Concert home.

Join them as they venture towards the light. At the crack of dawn, what awaits them beyond the horizon?
