World Cup Qualifier: Maldives 0 Hong Kong 1

A twelfth minute penalty from Paulo Carreiro was enough for Hong Kong to win their away game against the Maldives and keep their World Cup qualification campaign alive.

Hong Kong remain second in group C, two points behind Qatar, but three points ahead of China who they take on next week in Mongkok.

Hong Kong v China

Hong Kong will travel to Shenzhen to face China on Thursday, September 3 for their next match on the road to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The match will be played at the Shenzhen Baoan Sports Centre Stadium and a total number of 28,000 tickets will be available for public sale from the Chinese Football Association (CFA) on Tuesday, August 18. 2,200 tickets, individually priced at RMB480, have been allocated to supporters from Hong Kong and they are located at Lower Level 124, 125, 126 & Upper Level 228, 229 and 230 of the stadium.

HK supporters holding valid Home Visit Permit/ passport can access to http://www.mypiao.com for online ticket purchase.

Tickets bought will be sent by express delivery se remember to fill in your full mailing address. To get into the stadium you’ll need to present both the ticket and your Home Visit Permit/ passport.

Remember – 3 September is a national holiday in China and a one-off public holiday in Hong Kong to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Japan’s surrender.

Tickets for the third home game in Hong Kong’s World Cup qualification campaign against Qatar at Mongkok Stadium on the 8 September go on sale on the 3 July from Cityline price $130.

There are currently no ticket details for the Hong Kong v China game on 17 November – although it expected that the game will take place at the HK Stadium, subject to LCSD approval.

A patriotic and boisterous sold-out Mongkok Stadium had much to cheer as Hong Kong strolled past Bhutan seven goals to nil to get their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a winning start. Jaimes McKee open the scoring and his team-mates joined him on the score sheet at regular intervals. Only poor finishing kept the score from reaching double figures as Hong Kong totally outplayed the team 5 places above them in the Fifa world rankings.

Hundreds of fans were turned away as the stadium sold out just after 6pm. What the crowd thought of China’s Fifa racist insults of Hong Kong was pretty obvious as the ‘National’ anthem was drowned out by boos and loud cheers of Hong Kong. As one of the many signs hanging in the stadium said Hong is Not China

Hong Kong’s next match is against The Maldives at Mongkok Stadium, 8pm 16 June – tickets on sale now.

Magali Harvey named Women's Player of the Year 2014

Canada wing Magali Harvey has been named the IRB Women’s Player of the Year 2014 following her side’s 21-9 defeat by England in the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 final at Stade Jean Bouin in Paris on Sunday.

Harvey is the first Canadian to win the prestigious award and reflects the growth of women’s rugby in recent years, the wing having played a key role in Canada reaching their first WRWC final.

The 24-year-old edged out her captain and Canada number 8 Kelly Russell, Ireland full back Niamh Briggs and France number 8 Safi N’Diaye.

IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “I would like to congratulate Magali on winning this prestigious award. It is extremely well deserved. She has lit up Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 with her combination of electrifying pace, elusive running, ferocious defence and accurate place-kicking.

“Her try against France in the semi-final was perhaps the tournament highlight and certainly one of the tries of the year. I was privileged to have been sitting in the stand to watch it live.

“It is also important to highlight the contribution of other players too. In particular, the other women who made the shortlist – Niamh Briggs of Ireland, Kelly Russell of Canada and France’s Safi N’Diaye. Those players – and many others who just missed out – have helped to make this tournament such a success.

“The fact that so many spectators have come to watch, as well as record television audiences at home, is a testament to the quality of rugby that has been on display. The women’s game is certainly on the up and we will be doing everything we can at the IRB to make sure that upward trend continues.”

Harvey caught the eye with her performances throughout the tournament, scoring a hat-trick in a 26-point haul in Canada’s opening win over Spain and then going virtually the length of the field to score a try in the semi-final win over hosts France.
