Elaine Chow: 14 March, 1986 – 27 October, 2005

elaine chow

In loving memory of Elaine Chow who committed suicide in the early hours of the 27 October 2005. Gone but never forgotten!

Elaine was a wonderful, vibrant and happy woman, who brought joy to everyone she met. Her smile could and would brighten the sunniest and dreariest of days.

Her response to my full-time job offer during her internship was “You mean, you want to
pay me to go out and eat”. Writing that here and remembering her radiant smile when she said it, has managed to bring a smile to my face – even through the massive cloak of despair that I still feel at her death.

And while tears run down my cheeks, and my heart breaks as my mind replays the images of Elaine falling to her death – so fast yet in slow motion as my brain cannot process the truth of what it sees and my legs will never be moving fast enough to reach her… The pain of those memories never seems to fade, but nor I hope will the memories of her smile and the joy she infused to all around her. RIP Elaine.

Elaine Chow 3 people a day, on average, commit suicide in Hong Kong, it’s the unseen killer, if you know someone who’s talking (even jokingly) of it get them help/talk to them. If you’re thinking of suicide, please please talk to someone first.

19 Anniversary, bc magazine

bc magazine, september 1994 - issue 1

September 2013 marks the 19th Anniversary of the launch of bc magazine – what an amazing experience it has been – highs, lows, depths of despair, top of the world… Massive thanks are owed to far too many people for me to list individual contributors for fear of missing out someone – but without Tom Hallahan and Mark Fitzsimons, bc might never have made it to your hands. A big thank to all the advertisers who made bc possible. And a big thank you to you the readers – it’s a really rather wonderful emotion to watch people read and enjoy a magazine you’ve been a part of creating… Thank you!

Hong Kong 7s 2013 – Saturday

Hong Kong 7s 2013 – Saturday
A day of legends and abject failure. Amidst a great day of rugby, with upsets a plenty the performance of England had many in the crowd hiding behind their beer mugs as they drowned their disappointment. In a not too well kept secret The Beach Boys performed a 30 minute set at lunchtime which had the stadium singing along to classic hits.

Saturday’s true legend bestrode the HK Stadium pitch later in the day as Waisale Serevi, a spring in his stride, was inducted into the Rugby Hall of Fame.

Hong Kong Tens @ HK Football Club – 20-21 March 2013

Hong Kong Tens @ HK Football Club – 20-21 March 2013
At the seventh attempt the Penguins finally won the Hong Kong Tens in dramatic fashion as a pulsating final against Samurai was decided in the last minute when Australian winger Richard Hooper outsprinted the Samurai defence to touch down a last-minute grubber kick from England Sevens scrumhalf James Lightfoot-Brown, who had sprinted over 50 metres along the right touchline after making a break from a scrum near his own 22. www.hongkongtens.com
