Umbrella Movement 13 October: Police remove barriers outside the Mandarin Hotel

At around 5:30am Police moved in large numbers to remove barricades at various places in Admiralty and Central. The police negotiator described it as recovering government property… without wanting to be picky, since we HongKongers paid for it with our taxes isn’t it ‘our’ property. Regular police equipped riot shields, batons, helmets and gas masks provided a cordon for the members of the Police Tactical Unit – wear blue fatigues, instead of the more military green – who removed the makeshift roadblocks that had been in place for over two weeks.

The limited removals at first glance seem to do nothing for traffic movement other than allow guests of the Mandarin to arrive by taxi instead of having to walk a few feet – certainly worth the effort of a thousand uniformed police and numerous plain clothed officers!

The rain, physical and emotional fatigue – peaceful protest is hard work – made for lower numbers than in previous nights as lots of students and protestors took the night off to recharge their bodies. The violence by the blue-ribboned anti-umbrella movement members and the failure of the police to protect the protestors sent ripples of fear through those present but also hardened their resolve.

The Umbrella movement’s peaceful protests across Hong Kong appear in many photos and video coverage as a pulsing, vibrant sea of humanity. It is that, but within are the many individual stories, the new friendships created, the selflessness of the volunteers who hand out water and food free. The first-aiders who stand ready to help those in need. The recyclers who collect all the rubbish. The artists who take some of that lap sam and re-purpose it. The people who cook meals and bring them down to distribute as a way to show their support.

It is a truly amazing sea of humanity and such a positive re-affirmation of what a great a place Hong Kong is and the spirit and selflessness of her people.
