Gai Wu Falcons 17-0 Kowloon RFC @ Happy Valley – 30 September, 2017

Gai Wu beat Kowloon RFC 17-0 at Happy Valley as the Falcons got off to a commanding start scoring a try within the first five minutes. Jasmine Fong going over and then converting to put the Falcons 7-0 up, a lead they didn’t relinquish for the rest of the match.

Gai Wu in all red dominated for the first twenty minutes keeping Kowloon penned inside their 22m line, really testing the defence. Until a pass out wide to Mei Ngo Cheung saw her score the Falcons second try, extending their lead to 12-0 at 12 minutes.

Kowloon though were resolute in defence and played some of their best rugby in the latter part of the first half. All of which frustrated Gai Wu and saw them lose Hiu Ki Yip and Ka Yin Wong who both received yellow cards.

Playing from left to right, and looking to spread the Gai Wu defence, Kowloon kept up the pressure on the Falcons inside their 22. The Kowloon pack driving forward, gaining territory and keeping possession through multiple phases, to come within touching distance of the try line. Gai Wu though were up to the challenge, displaying a strong defensive line they eventually managed to turn the ball over and force Kowloon back. However the Falcons were unable to take advantage, 12-0 at half-time.

“In the second half it was a bit messy, and our coach did talk about that, and we have to reorganise and we still got a lot to walk on to improve,” said Fong.

Looking to blunt any Falcon momentum, Kowloon played a much tighter defensive game in the second half, as Gai Wu continued to attack. Gai Wu spent most of the half in Kowloon territory simple errors, penalties and strong defence saw the scoreboard remain static until five minutes from time when a pass out wide to Wing See Chiu saw her score the Falcons third try. Final score, 17-0.

“Although it turns out we lost but comparing the score [to last season], the score difference is not as big as we anticipated. This means our defense has improved a lot since last year,” said Fung Wai Man and Chan Hiu Tung after the match.
