Valley Black 53-0 Tai Po Dragons @ Happy Valley – 30 September, 2017

Valley Black thumped Tai Po Dragons 53-0 at Happy Valley. In a dominant display of skill and ‘professionalism’, Valley emphasised why they are the favourites to retain the league title.

“It was a tough game out there, especially at the breakdown they really came over the ball quite hard. They’re a good defensive team,” said Valley’s coach Bella Milo.

The game’s first try came inside 11 minutes at the hands of fly-half Milo, to put Valley up 5-0 and start their scoring spree. An inside pass to Riva Brill saw her split the Dragons defence but poor follow up play saw the chance wasted. A long pass out wide to Yuen Yin Lo saw her double Valley’s lead on the twenty-five minute mark, 10-0.

Tai Po suffered an injury early in the game to Fan Ying Tung who was substituted by She Ka Man. Valley’s relentless pressure kept the Dragons on the back foot and despite some strong defence the Black’s crossed for two more tries before the half ended – scored by Becky Lai Mang and Ying Tung Fan. Fullback Zoe Smith made both conversions, 24-0.

The break did nothing to stop Valley’s dominance and they needed just three minutes to add another seven to their total. Milo breaking through the middle dotted the ball down between posts for her second try of the day, Smith making the easy conversion.

The newly promoted Dragons responded with their best period of the match gaining and holding onto possession through multiple phases to push Valley deep into their half and force them to defend for almost the first time in the match. The Black defense kept their composure, turned over the ball and marched downfield to create a try for Rebecca Thompson who came on at halftime to replace Caitlin Spencer, 36-0.

Tai Po looked as if they had stemmed the flow of tries but their defensive effort caught up with them in the final 10 minutes and as they tired Valley took advantage scoring three more tries courtesy of Suzanne Sittko (converted by Smith). Coach Milo completed an impressive hat-trick as Nadia Cuvelier completed the scoring.

Gai Wu Falcons 17-0 Kowloon RFC @ Happy Valley – 30 September, 2017

Gai Wu beat Kowloon RFC 17-0 at Happy Valley as the Falcons got off to a commanding start scoring a try within the first five minutes. Jasmine Fong going over and then converting to put the Falcons 7-0 up, a lead they didn’t relinquish for the rest of the match.

Gai Wu in all red dominated for the first twenty minutes keeping Kowloon penned inside their 22m line, really testing the defence. Until a pass out wide to Mei Ngo Cheung saw her score the Falcons second try, extending their lead to 12-0 at 12 minutes.

Kowloon though were resolute in defence and played some of their best rugby in the latter part of the first half. All of which frustrated Gai Wu and saw them lose Hiu Ki Yip and Ka Yin Wong who both received yellow cards.

Playing from left to right, and looking to spread the Gai Wu defence, Kowloon kept up the pressure on the Falcons inside their 22. The Kowloon pack driving forward, gaining territory and keeping possession through multiple phases, to come within touching distance of the try line. Gai Wu though were up to the challenge, displaying a strong defensive line they eventually managed to turn the ball over and force Kowloon back. However the Falcons were unable to take advantage, 12-0 at half-time.

“In the second half it was a bit messy, and our coach did talk about that, and we have to reorganise and we still got a lot to walk on to improve,” said Fong.

Looking to blunt any Falcon momentum, Kowloon played a much tighter defensive game in the second half, as Gai Wu continued to attack. Gai Wu spent most of the half in Kowloon territory simple errors, penalties and strong defence saw the scoreboard remain static until five minutes from time when a pass out wide to Wing See Chiu saw her score the Falcons third try. Final score, 17-0.

“Although it turns out we lost but comparing the score [to last season], the score difference is not as big as we anticipated. This means our defense has improved a lot since last year,” said Fung Wai Man and Chan Hiu Tung after the match.

Hong Kong To Host 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships

Hong Kong will host the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships, the decision was announced at the end of the recent World Rowing Championships.

Coastal rowing takes place in open water in boats designed for a wide variety of sea conditions. It’s very different from Olympic style rowing where racing is in a straight line on flat water.

About 400 competitors are expected to attend with racing tentatively planned to take place in Victoria Harbour in November 2019.

Scallywag Adds to Volvo Ocean Race Crew

Scallywag, Hong Kong’s first ever entry in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, have announced three new crew members, Tom Clout (AUS), António Fontes (POR) and Dutch Olympic Silver medallist, Annemieke Bes (NED).

Skipper David Witt, who previously stated he was intending to sail with a crew of seven men, surprised many race watchers by including Bes as part of his final crew line up. New race rules, designed to incentivise teams to take female crew, limit an all-male crew to seven sailors. Under race rules, a mixed crew can include up to an additional two female sailors.*

Until this announcement, Team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag was the only boat in the race not to have any female sailors. Witt, who has had time to review his crew decisions since Leg Zero (qualifying) is now more confident in the setup of his team.

“We’re really excited to have these three experienced sailors joining us at Team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag. Annemieke and Tom have sailed with us before so we know what to expect in terms of their strengths and eeaknesses and where their skills will really enhance our overall performance.

“In addition to these two, António is a great asset, and altogether they have strengthened our team immensely from where we were when we started out two months ago.”

Bes was, until recently, part of team AkzoNobel, the Dutch entry in the race skippered by Simeon Tienpont, but recently made the switch to Witt’s team.

“I really look forward to sailing with Team Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag. I’ve known David from sailing back in Sydney and it’s always good fun to sail with him. The team are a great bunch of guys and we are working hard making final preparations ready for the October start date.”

Neither Clout nor Fontes has Volvo Ocean Race experience but Witt is confident their sailing experience and characters will contribute strongly to the team.

“I’m confident we’re now in a good position ahead of the start of the race and we will continue to improve throughout the legs as we work together as a new team.”

The boats are currently undergoing a final maintenance period in Lisbon ahead of sailing to Alicante for the start of the race on 22 October 2017.

On Board Reporter: Konrad Frost (GBR).

*Other crew configurations include 10 sailors if the team consists of an even male/female split. An all-female team may race with 11 crew.
